Woman's dust coat dress
1880 - 1890Gulgong Pioneers Museum
This is an important example of occupational or travel dress. Unostenatious garments, such as this one, can be overlooked in collections, but this garment is quite rare. Sometimes called a 'duster' they are quite common in American mail order catalogues. They were worn over smart clothes to protect from dust or weather. The fastening right down the front, to the absolute bottom of the hem, suggests the wearer intended to eliminate any speck of dust collecting on her more expensive ... more

There is nothing elaborate about this tunic, no embroidery, lace or ribbon. It is simply a uniform, designed for practical work-wear purposes. The pants are full-length, khaki as well and made from wool ... more

Qantas Pucci Uniform
1974 - 1987Qantas Heritage Collection
The Qantas Pucci uniform symbolises the freedom and optimism of the mid 1970s. Designed during the Whitlam era, when Australia was asserting itself on the international stage, and during the social upheavals of the mid-late twentieth century, the uniform broke with tradition. Its feather pattern and bright colours were chosen to represent freedom, youth, 'flower power' and Australian topography. The absence of a hat was a deliberate break from past practices - a sign that the formalities of yester-year were being abandoned. The 'Pucci' represents important developments in the airline industry, as it ... more

19th century convict jacket
1855 - 1880Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences
For convicts transported to the colonies of Australia, inadequate and inappropriate clothing was just one of the many hardships to be endured. Convicts were issued with prison clothing such as this jacket, often of the coarse, ready-made, loose fitting variety known as 'slops'. This clothing was impractical for the Australian climate and uncomfortable since the woollen fabric was coarse and cheap. These clothes were intended to humiliate convicts and this was part of the punishment. The parti colouring meant that ... more
